My telegram No. 6 (of January 5th; Boxer
Indemnity).
1. His jesty's Government have decided
to remit to China future instalments of
Indemnity: and it le their intention to take
similar decision as regards instalments already
subject to legislative sanction by Parliament
and therefore to an element of uncertainty and
delay.
2. The form of remission will be unoon-
ditional, but His Majesty's Government are
anxious if possible to obtain some assurances
ac to expenditure of the funds. The best way
of attaining this object would be on the lines
indieeted in your telegram No. 1393 viz., that
initiative should come from the Chinese side in
the following manner.
